The Storytellers - Plant Essence Set
Welcome to this set of plant essences I have called The Storytellers. Each of the Storytellers essences are plants that help us to be heard, to listen well and speak our truth with kindness.
Plant essences are a subtle yet powerful form of plant medicine and a beautiful way of finding allies and emotional support from the landscape – wherever you are.
Throughout time people have felt a deep connection to the landscape and to the plants, creatures and waters around them. From this connection they have found healing, wisdom, shelter, art, ritual and culture.
The renaissance physician, philosopher and alchemist, Paracelsus, called the energy that connects us with nature and the universe the Archeus, and said that in order to heal we must work with this vital force.
Since my childhood, I have sensed the Archeus and instinctively turned to nature for help and healing. Now, five hundred years on from Paracelsus, I am committed to helping others connect to the healing power of nature and to finding their own medicine in the landscape.
In this set, you have essences of Bee Balm, Harakeke (flax), and Mullein. They are strong healers and beautiful plant allies for you as you go through life. They will help you deepen your connection to nature in powerful and life-affirming ways.
When we recognise a plant for its energetic ‘character’ as well as its physical form and therapeutic benefits, this subtle yet powerful form of healing becomes available to us. Each plant’s unique energetic properties melds with our own energetic needs, bringing us back to a place of harmony and balance.
Archeus plant essences are handcrafted from organically grown and wildcrafted plant material harvested according to season and the lunar calendar. We also use quartz-infused water and grape alcohol for preservation.
You can use these essences on their own, or you can create your own blend according to need. Enjoy and let the magic happen.

Bee Balm (Botanical name: Monarda fistulosa)
Positive attribute: clarity and calm, appeasement
Helps when: feeling used and hurt and wanting to lash out with harsh words
Primary quality: calm
Planetary influence: Mercury (with Saturn)
Medicine wheel: West
Bee balm is a member of the mint family and native to North America. It was used traditionally for a range of common problems due to its antiseptic and anaesthetic properties. This is easy to believe as when you nibble a leaf it is hot and peppery and gradually makes the tip of your tongue go numb.
Bee balm’s calming and numbing energy can help us keep our words in check. It reminds us to think first and speak later. Its qualities are also of comfort when we want to take the heat out of a situation, reduce our anger or avoid harsh words being spoken.
Bee balm symbolises compassion and calm. Perfect for keeping life harmonious.
Harakeke (Botanical name: Phormium tenax)
Positive attribute: helps words flow
Helps when: self-expression is hard, creative block
Primary quality: holding our stories
Planetary influence: Mercury
Medicine wheel: North
Harakeke, or flax as it is commonly known, is a superb ally for communication. Harakeke has many uses including weaving, paper making, adhesive, wound dressing, toothache remedy and bedding.
Traditionally used as a digestive aid and later as paper and sealing wax, harakeke’s energy can help shift creative blocks and get words flowing again, making it an ideal remedy for writers and orators.
Harakeke is used to weave beautiful baskets, known as kete, and so with the image of a basket in mind, we can see how flax helps us hold onto our stories as treasures to hand on to others and the next generation.
Mullein (Botanical name: Verbascum thapsus)
Positive attribute: clear communication and ability to listen
Helps when: can’t get message across, unwilling to heed advice, being reckless
Primary quality: liberation
Planetary influence: Saturn (with Mercury)
Medicine wheel: North
Take a look at dry hillsides and banks and you’ll recognise mullein by her large silvery grey, soft, furry leaves and tall stalk, which has little yellow flowers in summer.
Traditionally, her leaves are used to help reset bones and sprains. They were smoked as a remedy for lung and bronchial problems and carried as a talisman of safety, helping us on our journey. Mullein flowers are used as a remedy for ear problems.
Mullein develops a very strong grandmother energy. Wearing her crown of flower stalks, she watches over her offspring on the hill below her. She is wise and her energy brings wisdom and the ability to speak one’s truth and to listen well.
